Extraction |
SOXFLO Cat. No: 17.1000 General A unique and innovative approach to solvent extraction, previously carried out by soxhlet and modified soxhlet techniques, has been devised that has resulted in improved safety and more efficient extraction at ambient temperature. The result is a highly improved alternative to the traditional soxhlet method. The Soxflo technique enables solvent volumes to be reduced to below 50ml for many sample types, still maintaining the usual sample weight of 5g. Typically extraction and solvent evaporation are complete with one hour. Comparative tests with the current heated systems and the traditional soxhlet have proved that the Soxflo gives higher extraction levels, in less time and with greater reproducibility. Apparatus The Soxflo apparatus employs three individual, in-line extractor units within an outer case, with an evaporation system mounted within an inner compartment. Ambient temperature extraction is achieved by a controlled flow of solvent, from a reservoir above the sample, the solvent, together with the extract, passes from the sample holder directly into the collection vessel below. Each extraction unit consists of three sections: the top with a hinged solvent reservoir, and the center sample section, are mounted above the inner evaporation compartment. The lower section, collection vessel and exhaust manifold, is located within the inner compartment. Evaporation After extraction. Solvent evaporation is achieved by a hot air system, and the solvent vapor condensed in a cold trap returning a 95% recovery. During the evaporation cycle, a stream of hot air is directed at the base of each collection vessel. The air temperature is controlled by a solid state monitoring system. A cooling mode can be brought into operation at the end of the evaporation cycle, prior to removal of the sample vassals. Alternatively, if low temperatures are necessary for heat sensitive samples. The vessel containing the solvent extracts can be detached and the solvent removed on a rotary evaporator. The three extraction units employ a common exhaust system, which is piped through the back of the case and connected to a cold trap. The use of the cold trap is essential for safe solvent recovery; it produces reclamation levels of over 95% and enables the final outlet to be left open to the atmosphere. Evaporation efficiency may be increased by the use of a vacuum system. In most cases, test have shown that the Soxflo has a higher extraction capability, and replicates are more reproducible, than with other methods Filter discs Special filter discs are supplied, for containing the sample within the sample tube. Two are required for each test, one at each end of the tube. A compression tool and sample-removing plunger are supplied with each instrument, together with one pack of 100 filter discs. Cold trap An optional cold trap accessory the CTR1 - may be mounted at the side of the main case and has an ice reservoir. A water-cooled model is also available. |
