New CRMs for Catalytic Converter Recycling
Recycling materials from end-of-life automotive components is an essential part of building a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. Among the most valuable of these components are catalytic converters. Used in nearly all internal combustion engine vehicles, they reduce harmful emissions by converting toxic gases into less harmful substances. Their ceramic substrates are coated with precious metals known as Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) — including platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh), which are critical to many clean energy and industrial technologies.
Recovering these high-value elements from spent catalysts keeps them in circulation and reduces the need for virgin ore, which requires significant energy for mining, extraction, and processing. However, effective recovery depends on accurate laboratory analysis to ensure these metals can be extracted efficiently and returned to use. Closed-loop metal recovery is key to reducing our dependence on newly mined resources and supporting a truly circular economy.
To support this, we’re pleased to release two new Certified Reference Materials designed for the elemental analysis of recycled automotive catalysts. These CRMs provide laboratories worldwide with a reliable reference for PGM recovery analysis with certified values for major and trace elements, plus an extensive list of rare earth elements (REEs).

Produced in full compliance with ISO 17034, these CRMs deliver a matrix-matched, highly characterised, and dependable benchmark for calibrating instruments and validating analytical methods in the analysis of spent automotive catalysts. With uniform particle sizing (<30 µm) for optimum homogeneity, they perform consistently across a wide range of techniques, including ICP-OES/MS, XRF, AAS, and more.
